Today the San Diego Mud Run was held in our neck of the woods, just a couple of miles from our house. Leon became the substitute 4th member of a team that included Linda's cousin (Andy) and 2 of his friends. Since hurting his foot last fall (plantar fasciitis) and throwing out his back last month, Leon hasn't been as active as he used to be, to say the least able to run a 10K. But he took on the challenge and filled in the 4th spot on Andy's team with little training or conditioning. Luckily the event is more for fun then being a true competition. Although Leon did make an attempt the week before to go out and run 5 miles around our neighborhood, hills and all. Even though he was soar and feeling it a couple of days later, he seemed to think that was better than just completely shocking his body cold turkey the day of the race.
The course was held on the grounds of Skyline church and consisted of a 5K obstacle course that included plenty of mud and a huge mountain to climb. The event offers both individual and team (of 4) races in either 5K or 10K (2 laps) and they even have a kid run event (no timers were involved and only a fraction of the course). The catch to running on a team is that all members have to cross the finish line at the same time. Leon's team finished the race around an hour and 20 minutes, which wasn't too bad. It was a warm day and considering the fact that most of the team members were not in shape or recovering from injuries, they did pretty good.
From the looks of it, they all had a great time. They had contemplated doing just a 5K after they found out that they had to do the course twice (worst being climbing the hill again), but they stuck to their plans and seemed more proud that they accomplished such a feet! The boys and Linda stood by the sidelines hoping to catch a glimpse of them in passing and to cheer them on towards the finish line. One of the funniest thing about the race is how much people dispose of their clothes and shoes afterwards. Leon mentioned that he threw his old and now muddy shoes into a collection pile of more than 1,000 pairs of shoes (3,000 total runners in the entire event). The church possibly tries to clean the shoes and donate them to a needy cause. As for clothes, they are pretty much destroyed as expected. Leon's once white tank top became a permanent brown. The boys and I are so proud of Leon and cousin Andy and their entire team for competing in this type of race. They hope to get back into training and prepare for the big Camp Pendleton Mud Run in June, which from what they hear, the course is just as long (10K) but much more difficult. The boys were intrigued by all the mud and the runners. Maybe next year they will participate in the kid run possibly with Mommy!
Enjoy the photos and congrats again to team "Crawling towards middle age."
